Part L 2011 - Breakfast Briefing

The Irish Green Building Council with the CIF have organised a breakfast briefing on the new Part L regulations.

The new revised section Part L 2010( Conservation of Fuel and Energy) of the  building regulations for dwellings are coming into force at the end of this year 2011. These are intended to achieve a 60 % reduction for new dwellings in energy consumption over and above dwellings built to  2002 regulations. Compliance with the new regulations is onerous and requires a completely different approach to construction than heretofore. Using backstop insulation values will no longer ensure compliance and in most cases there is a need to go well beyond these to  Passive House levels of insulation. They will also require a much more rigorous approach to thermal bridging and understanding of the importance of correct detailing and air tightness at fabric junctions. They will have a major impact on construction methodologies and these need to be understood by the wider industry. This briefing is intended to give an insight into the key changes and consequences for the house building sector of the new regulations.

The briefing will be given by William Scott FRIAI, followed by questions and discussion.

William Scott FRIAI is a fellow of the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland, former chair of the RIAI sustainability task force and has been providing training with his Company Scott + McNeill in low energy building and retrofit over the past ten years.  He has 35 years of experience in directing projects of every scale and complexity in industrial, pharmaceutical, public building, security and residential sectors.

Christmas Network event for Irish Green Building Council and ÉASCA Members.

Dublin City Council Sustainability Initiatives.

 City Planner Dick Gleeson will be explaining how  Dublin City Council is using the Natural Step Framework for sustainability to underpin its Draft Development plan. DCC worked with Trinity House Research team comprising Professor Mark Dyer, Emma Siddal and Thomas Grey to develop a shared vision for the sustainable development of the Dublin region. From this vision a suite of sustainable development indicators were then identified to baseline the city’s current performance, benchmark it against other European cities, set targets for future development and track progress towards these targets. This suite of 38 headline indicators will inform the Dublin Regional Sustainability Plan due to be published in 2012 and it is hoped that the suite will also be incorporated into future local authority development plans. The team will present this work at the event.

This will be following by networking drinks and provides a chance for IGBC members to meet each other and contribute to the development of the Irish Green Building Council.

World Green Building Week 2011

The IGBC and Éasca are celebrating World Green Building Week (WGBW), marked annually by Green Building Councils around the world during the third week in September with events promoting sustainable buildings and communities.

Most events are open to non members with some restricted to members only and invited guests. The events include:

  • Lunchtime talk hosted by Ecocem on Carbon Footprinting on Monday19th September, 12:45 pm

  • Lunchtime talk 'new instruments for delivering energy efficiency targets on Tuesday 20th September, 12:45 pm

  • Lunchtime talk hosted by Scott Tallon Walker Architects on 21st September, 12:45 pm

  • An evening networking event on 20 Sept for members of IGBC, Easca and invited guests at Darc Space 6:00 pm

  • IPFMA annual Conference

  • IIEA 2nd annual Retrofit Conference - Bringing retrofit to market.

  • CIBSE Webinar- Passive House Myth or Reality - 22nd Septembe

Dublin’s energy agency Codema would like to invite you to the GREENOV Seminar on 16th March in the Wood Quay Venue, Dublin City Council, from 08.30am – 1pm.

The seminar is free to attend and will have a strong focus on clustering Irish SMEs for green renovation jobs both here and abroad.  It will also explore the barriers that currently exist for SMEs working in this sector and how these might be addressed.  Case studies on successful cluster formation will also be presented on the day from European partner regions.

The GREENOV project aims to develop the economic sector of sustainable renovation by stimulating innovation within SMEs across North-West Europe.

As revealed in the latest issue of Construct Ireland our economy is dangerously exposed to oil price spikes and supply interruptions. 90% of Ireland's energy use is imported fossil fuels. Ireland has a clear decision. We can do nothing and continue to see billions of euro wasted leaving our economy to buy imported fossil fuels or we can invest now in energy efficiency and in harnessing local energy sources.

Ireland needs to immediately implement plans to become an oil-free country and a world leader in sustainable energy. It's up to all of us to send the government a strong signal that an energy revolution must be the foundations of Ireland's recovery.

Easca's Monthly Network Meeting

Join us for our  monthly meetings combining presentations and discussions to explore a range of issues in ecological building.
